A while back my friend Michelle Warner sent out an email talking about the best career advice she ever received and how she’s carried it into her business. The advice? Find yourself 3 key people who, when in a pinch, will be more than happy to help you out (with the favors going both ways of course). She was, at the time, working a communications and PR job for the U of Illinois’ athletic department when she was told to make sure she had a ticket person who could provide access to tickets when needed, an equipment person who could get one of the athletes sorted in a pinch when a freshly pressed uniform was needed on short order, and a facilities person who could fix any unexpected pressbox problem. That advice worked out so well for her that she continued to look for her three people no matter the role or industry she was in. When I read her email, I wasn’t surprised.
