who would your three be?

A while back my friend Michelle Warner sent out an email talking about the best career advice she ever received and how she’s carried it into her business.

The advice?

Find yourself 3 key people who, when in a pinch, will be more than happy to help you out (with the favors going both ways of course).

She was, at the time, working a communications and PR job for the U of Illinois’ athletic department when she was told to make sure she had a ticket person who could provide access to tickets when needed, an equipment person who could get one of the athletes sorted in a pinch when a freshly pressed uniform was needed on short order, and a facilities person who could fix any unexpected pressbox problem.

That advice worked out so well for her that she continued to look for her three people no matter the role or industry she was in.

When I read her email, I wasn’t surprised.

Relying on others (and being relied upon) is a great way to grow and scale a business. And yet, it was a reminder that I needed because, although I’m quick to offer my support to whoever needs it, I’m often hesitant to ask for help for myself

After thinking about it for a while I decided my three people would be

  1. A finance person. Someone to help me with my numbers and give me solid advice, but who I can also ask random questions to when they pop into my head.
  2. A marketing expert who can keep me up-to-date on the trends and changes, give me advice on things I could be doing better, and take a quick peek at a sales page when I’m two minutes away from going live and having a crisis of confidence.
  3. An impact amplifier. Someone who can look at what I’m doing and provide insight and guidance on how I can have more impact without increasing my workload.

So what about you, Reader? Who would your three be?

Would it be an Email Marketer who can quickly suggest better subject lines and preview text to increase your open rates, or provide simple tweaks that’ll encourage your readers to engage or buy without being pushy, or who can look at your onboarding and suggest ways of connecting better with your audience?

Or a Business Strategist who can point out when you might be putting the cart before the horse and suggest easy ways to make something easier while still having the desired effect on your business?

Perhaps you’re like me and want a numbers person by your side. Someone who can help you keep more of what you make and also help you focus on building your net worth while making sense of all the numbers for you.

Or maybe it’s a someone who lives and breathes social media and can help take your IG account from crickets to raving fans who eagerly click and comment any time you post something new.

Or maybe you need an expert copywriter who knows how to capture the essence of you in text and can tell you how to make any sales page more sticky by tweaking a headline or two, or an engagement specialist who can help you connect deeper with your audience so they learn to know, like and trust you quicker and with more confidence, or maybe a customer journey specialist, someone who can help you ensure every person who enters your realm feels seen and taken care of and important at every stage.
