I aim to be as lazy as these pups

I was chatting with Laura (Belgray; storyteller extraordinaire, client and friend) and told her how crazy my days have been now that Caleb is working out of the house again.

With him not around I have to walk the dogs by myself. And because they’re so big I have to take them separately, which means I’m out with them for about an hour at least three times a day.

“You must be getting like 12 miles a day.

I wish.

My dogs aren’t that dedicated to covering ground. They spend most of the time stopping every few feet to thoroughly snuffle the ground, investigate a nice-looking stick, or lay around sniffing the air. If I’m lucky they might find a deflated ball in the field and play with that a bit.

But double-digit miles? No.

I typically get 1.5 to 3.5 miles a day. Which is still WAAAAY more than I was getting. That’s good. But, as I said to Laura, it’s not the most productive time.

Honestly, I’m not complaining. It’s nice having an excuse to not do anything.

I’ve thought about using the time to listen to podcasts, record thoughts for emails, draft answers to customer questions, or create content for social media. But I’d much rather just slip off my shoes, put my feet in the grass, turn my face to the sun, and breathe. It is the most energizing part of my day.

This whole conversation reminded me of two things.

  1. Thinking I was hitting 12 miles a day was a classic case of making an assumption based on too little data. Many business owners fall into the same trap, wasting time and money fixing non-issues based on scant evidence*.
  2. Sometimes, what seems like wasted time is actually time well spent. Spending three hours a day simply being, without worrying about productivity, can feel wasteful to some (me included). But then I remember, self-care is world care. Taking care of yourself is a productive act.

If you struggle with not having enough time in your day and, like me, don’t want to sacrifice every hour of your waking life for your business. Might I suggest you register for my free workshop series coming up in June? It’s designed to give you practical and implementable strategies to save you hours every month. PS — *It's crucial to gather more than one piece of information before drawing a conclusion in your business. Yet, many guru coaches often do just that—provide advice based on minimal information, because that’s what worked for them. Yet, the average results their clients achieve rarely meet expectations.

Because nuance matters – what works for one business might not work for another.

That's one of the big reasons I created the 627 Advisory Board. Our experts ask detailed questions to understand each member's unique situation before offering tailored advice. Doors are always open, but when you join before June 27th, you also get a free 60-minute strategy session with yours truly! Check out all the details here.
